The first time I was in Manhattan many years ago, I was dropped off at the George Washington Bridge, took the subway and came up somewhere in the upper westside and I was sorta freaked out by the vision of the great wieght of humanity pressing down, held up by the Atlas of the retail shops and businesses - I mean, look at all the weight of the solid, dense apartments held up in the air by a couple of floor of light airy retail. It sounds like it could have been the revelatory moment of a free-market evangelist but was in fact the first time I realized that I didn't understand how the world worked in a real fundamental way.
